Hello everyone,
Just a quick announcement about the MESL Taxonomy School upcoming courses...
*Terebellomorpha and Nephtyidae.*
On 23rd to 25th February DrSc Igor Jirkov will be presenting his new
pictorial keys on Terebellomorpha and Nephtyidae. These are revised and
updated versions of his 2008 keys that are now more user friendly and
include new recently described species. The workshop will run over three
days, two dedicated to Terebellomorpha and one to Nephtyidae.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own specimens for checking by
DrSc Igor Jirkov.
*Phyllodocidae.*
On the 25^th to the 27^th March Prof. Frederik Pleijeland Dr Arne Nygren
will be runninga workshop on Phyllodocidae. This course will enable
participants to gain experience and develop confidence in the
identification of species of this family. The course will include an
introductory talk on the group covering body parts, terminology and the
use of a newly made dichotomous key for the group. The main focus of the
weekend will be microscope work, allowing students to work through
specimens at their own speed. Participants will carry out identification
with the assistance of two professional marine biologists. Specimens
from the majority of British genera will be available. Time will be
allocated at the end of the course for participants to look at their own
specimens with assistance from the course leaders.
*Benthic Taxonomy Summer School. *
The two week Benthic Taxonomy Summer School provides students with
hands-on experience, working in the marine environment and an
introduction to invertebrate species identification skills. The course
will build upon practical sampling and identification skills which many
students will have gained during related undergraduate degree courses
and provide skills and experience vital to those wishing to pursue a
commercial or academic career in Marine Biology. During the first week
students have the opportunity to carry out both intertidal and subtidal
sampling, using equipment that is routinely used for both commercial and
academic collections. Samples collected in the field will be sorted and
identified back in the laboratory giving students a taste of the
biodiversity found in British seas. The second week of the course
focuses on the identification of marine polychaetes and amphipods, two
of the most commonly encountered groups of benthic invertebrates.
Participants are given the option of attending either or both weeks of
the summer school and there will also be the opportunity to learn
Seasearch dive survey techniques over the weekend. The summer school
will be held at the resource centre at the Marine Biological Association
of the UK where students will also have access to the National Marine
Biological Library and other MBA resources.
Best wishes,
Emma
