Dear Maria Cristina,
Depressing news, and I have signed the petition. I hope there will be support from the Italian public and a political reconsideration subsequently.
I have a suggestion that perhaps the blunter words 'will be closed' or 'will be abolished' rather than 'will be suppressed' should be used for clarity of conveying the message from the President of your institute to English speakers ( list members see: http://www.szn.it/ ), and for gathering support from scientists in other countries?
In English 'suppress' is not the word commonly used in such situations. It could mean 'put an end to' or 'stop the activities of', but also just to restrain an activity. In Italian the word was 'soppressione' which also translates as 'abolition', a word of unambiguous meaning in English.
Very best,
Geoff
