CAMS Conference Student Bursaries

ACS is offering a number of bursaries to assist with covering registration and travel costs for students who are presenting at CAMS.
Funding is being offered for both Victorian (200ドル) and Interstate (800ドル) higher-degree research students.
Students should be a member of ACS, and have been accepted to give a talk or poster presentation at CAMS.
Preference will be given to those presenting on a topic related to ceramics.
Please contact bursaries@austceram.com to apply, and include a note of endorsement from your supervisor.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome by 17th September 2021.

THE AUSTRALIAN CERAMIC SOCIETY

Furthering all aspects of ceramics

The Australian Ceramic Society, is an organisation that works towards furthering all aspects of ceramics in science, industry, research, trade and in art. The Society aims to bring together all those interested and involved in ceramics for mutual co-operation and the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

The Society has a Federal Council comprised of representatives from the various state branches. These are in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia and each operates autonomously with its own committee.

Dr Chau Chak Wing
In an Australian first, world renowned architect Frank Gehry has lent his highly sought-after hands to the design of the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building for the Business School of the University of Technology Sydney. Utilising no less than 320,000 custom-made Bowral Bricks, the building has been heralded as the centerpiece of the 1ドル-billion City Campus Master Plan.
Hot isostatic pressing
A full-size hot isostatically pressed can containing ~30 kg of an inactive version of the waste form targeted for immobilising active waste from ANSTO’s new 99Mo radiopharmaceutical production plant when it goes online.
Fly ash
Fly ash is a fine powder that is a byproduct of burning pulverized coal in electric generation power plants. Fly ash is a pozzolan, a substance containing aluminous and siliceous material that forms cement in the presence of water. When mixed with lime and water, fly ash forms a compound similar to Portland cement.
Powellite glass-ceramic nuclear waste simulant
Backscattered SEM micrograph of the ANSTO-prepared inactive simulant of the active powellite glass-ceramic. The white material is mainly powellite (CaMoO4) plus apatite and the matrix is a borosilicate glass.

Carbide in Ferrite Matrix
The influence of carbide morphology on the deformation and fracture mechanisms of as-received and complete spheroidization 14Cr1MoR steel was investigated using an in situ scanning electron microscope (SEM) under tension testing. During spheroidization damage, the carbide morphology changed from the original lamellar cementite present in pearlite to granular M23C6 carbide, which was concentrated along the ferrite grain boundaries.

ABOUT ACS

The Society’s roots lie in both New South Wales and Victoria. In New South Wales, it had its genesis in the Department of Ceramic Engineering at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) which had been established in the late 1950’s under the late Professor Eric McCartney. In 1961, a meeting was called by Professor McCartney of all Sydney ceramists interested in the possible formation of some kind of Ceramic Society. The keynote speaker at this meeting was the late Len Cane, whom I believe became Chairman of the ‘Ceramic Society of New South Wales’ which resulted from this meeting.
