Moving/Saving charts and data from old computer/Backing up

COPY FILES FROM OLD PC

Instructions if you have Solar Fire 7, 8 or higher
- On your old PC (where your old Solar Fire is) put a CD into the CD/DVD drive or put a USB/Memory stick into an open USB port.
- In the folders view, open up (click on) the C:\ drive and find the "Solar Fire User Files" folder using the operating system list below. (You can get here by clicking on the folder at the bottom left of your desktop, called Windows Explorer, or by using the Start button and then clicking on Computer or My Computer or My PC on the right hand side).
- Hit the + sign in front of the folder or double click on the folder itself.
- Repeat the last step above until you reach the "Solar Fire User Files" folder.
WinXP and earlier: “C:\ Documents and Settings \< LoginName >\My Documents\Solar Fire User Files\”
Vista: “C:\Users\< LoginName >\Documents\Solar Fire User Files\"
Windows 7, 8 and later: “C:\Users\< LoginName >\My Documents\Solar Fire User Files\”
Windows 10: "This PC > Documents>Solar Fire User Files >”
Windows 11: "This PC > Documents>Solar Fire User Files >”
(NOTE: Your computer may have a "My Documents" folder or a folder called just "Documents".)
- Find the and select the folder that is labeled Charts in "Solar Fire User Files" and doubleclick it.
- Look for files in this folder with the SUN icon (Solar Fire icon). These charts will be of the type "Solar Fire Charts" and will end with .cht or .SFcht.
- Click on the first one, then hold down the CTRL key and click on the rest so they all become highlighted.
- While your mouse pointer is on one of the files, RIGHT click on the mouse and click on "Copy" from the menu that appears.
- Once the copy is complete remove the CD or USB/Memory stick and place it in your new PC.
Instructions if you have Solar Fire 3,4,5, or 6
- On your old PC (where your old Solar Fire is) put a CD into the CD/DVD drive or put a USB/Memory stick into an open USB port.
- In the folders view, open up (click on) the C:\ drive and find the SOLFIRE folder. (You can get here by clicking on the folder at the bottom left of your desktop, called Windows Explorer, or by using the Start button and then clicking on Computer or My Computer or My PC on the right hand side).
- Hit the + sign in front of the SOLFIRE folder or double click on the folder itself.
- Double click on the folder named "USERDATA".
- Look for files in this folder with the SUN icon (Solar Fire icon). These charts will be of the type "Solar Fire Charts" and will end with .cht.
- Click on the first one, then hold down the CTRL key and click on the rest so they all become highlighted.
- While your mouse pointer is on one of the files, RIGHT click on the mouse and click on Copy from the menu that appears.
- Once the copy is complete remove the CD or USB/Memory stick and place it in your new PC.
PASTE FILES ONTO NEW PC
After you have put the CD or USB/Memory stick in your new PC:
- In the folders view, open up (click on) the USB or CD/DVD drive (this will be a letter like D:\ or E:\ or F:\) and find the charts you copied from the old computer. (You can get here by clicking on the folder at the bottom left of your desktop, called Windows Explorer, or by using the Start button and then clicking on Computer or My Computer or My PC on the right hand side).
NOTE: The folder (from the CD drive or USB drive) where your copied charts are located may open automatically with a function called "Auto Play" when you put it into the new computer.
- You should be at the list of files from your old computer, the ones that end in .cht or .SFcht.
- Click on the first one, then hold down the CTRL key and click on the rest so they all become highlighted.
- While your mouse pointer is on one of the files, RIGHT click on the mouse and click on "Copy" from the menu that appears.
- Then go to the Solar Fire "Charts" folder on your new computer, using the operating system list below.
Windows XP: “C:\ Documents and Settings \< LoginName >\My Documents\Solar Fire User Files\Charts\”
Vista: “C:\Users\< LoginName >\Documents\Solar Fire User Files\Charts\"
Windows 7 and 8: “C:\Users\< LoginName >\My Documents\Solar Fire User Files\Charts”
Windows 10: "This PC > Documents>Solar Fire User Files >Charts”
Windows 11: "This PC > Documents>Solar Fire User Files >Charts”

(NOTE: Your computer may have a "My Documents" folder or a folder called just "Documents".)
- Right click on the "Charts" folder and then click "Paste".
Your chart files are now copied into your new version of Solar Fire.
