Learning Support Program (LSP)

Learning Support Program (LSP)

LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAM

The Learning Support Program (LSP) is for undergraduate students admitted on an exceptions basis who need remedial assistance in the areas of math, reading, and/or writing in order to be ready to take courses in the Core Curriculum.

SAT/ACT scores must be less than 7 years old.

For students who took the SAT BEFOREMarch 2016:

  • SAT Verbal score of 430 or ACT English score of 17 makes a student eligible for English 1101.
  • SAT Math score of 400 or ACT Math score of 17 makes a student eligible for Math 1001 or Math 1401.
  • SAT Math score 650 or an ACT Math score of 29 makes a student eligible for Math 1111.
  • Students who score between a SAT 400/ACT 17 and SAT 650/ACT 29 and need to take Math 1111 or higher are strongly encouraged to take the Math Placement Test to attempt to test into the appropriate course. Students must score at least a 269 on the Math Placement Test to move directly into Math 1111 (or higher).

For students who took the SAT March 2016 or AFTER:

  • SAT Verbal score of 480 or ACT English score of 17 makes a student eligible for English 1101.
  • SAT Math score of 440 or ACT Math score of 17 makes a student eligible for Math 1001 or Math 1401.
  • SAT Math score 670 or an ACT Math score of 29 makes a student eligible for Math 1111.
  • Students who score between a SAT 440/ACT 17 and SAT 680/ACT 29 and need to take Math 1111 or higher are strongly encouraged to take the Math Placement Test to attempt to test into the appropriate course. Students must score at least a 269 on the Math Placement Test to move directly into Math 1111 (or higher).

GPA Exemption – Students with a calculated high school GPA of 3.2 or higher are eligible for Math 1001, 1401 and English 1101, provided that they have met the Required High School Curriculum minimums in Math and English. (GPA exemption temporarily lowered to 2.5 due to Covid-19 limiting access to ACT/SAT testing)

Students are placed into the Learning Support Program (LSP) if they meet any of the following conditions:

  • SAT/ACT scores do not meet the exemption requirements listed above and no other exemption or placement test score is on record
  • Calculated high school GPA is below 3.2 and no other exemption or placement test score is on record
  • Failure to meet the Required High School Curriculum requirements in English or mathematics.
  • The minimum Next-Generation ACCUPLACER scores for direct placement into collegiate level courses for students Fall 2019 or after are:
    • Reading – 237
    • Writing – 004
    • Math 1001 /1401– 258
    • Math 1111 – 269

It is required that LSP students meet each term with an academic advisor for advice regarding course selection. For this reason, an advisement hold is placed on each LSP student’s record each term. The hold is lifted after the student has seen an advisor and their schedule is approved. Here are the LSP foundation and co-requisite courses offered:

  • ENGL 0999 (Support for English Composition) taken with ENGL 1101
  • MATH 0996 (Support for Elementary Statistics) taken with MATH 1401
  • MATH 0997 ( Support for Quantitative Reasoning) taken with MATH 1001
  • MATH 0999 (Support for College Algebra) taken with MATH 1111

LSP courses do not count towards degree requirements or a student’s GPA at Georgia State University. They are, however, used to calculate a GPA for HOPE, Pell and other financial aid awards, and the courses and grades earned appear on a university transcript. LSP courses are graded using the same system as other Georgia State courses.
