Supernovae as a standard candle for cosmology.

Abstract

It is suggested that a coordinated program of observations of supernovae (SN), particularly Type I supernovae (SN I), with the Space Telescope has the potential for determining the cosmological constant with greater accuracy than on the basis of other standard candles. Advantages of SN I over SN II for this purpose are discussed. Attention is also given to SN calibration, two possible classes of SN I, the light curves of SN I, and SN statistics.
