We’re thrilled with the design. Simple, bold, and memorable. Hats off to the designers at Crown (our publisher) who indulged us, put up with us, and, in the end, crafted a beautiful design.

The front.

The back.

We can’t wait to share this book with you. Everything we know about business is in Rework. Subscribe to our mailing list and follow us on Twitter for news, updates, and the latest announcements related to 37signals and Rework.

Exciting news! Congratulations Jason and David! (Yes, pre-ordered but also clicked "Tell the Publisher I’d like to read this book on Kindle").

Regarding the design, one thing that I immediately noticed is how clean the back was. I’m curious as to why mockups and such don’t include all the additional details that will most definitely be on the cover. (barcode, price, publisher name/info, etc.)

Do you guys see mockups with that included?

It just reminds me of a friend who recently had the front glass of her clothing boutique designed. The concepts sent over by the designer didn’t include all the extra details such as: credit card stickers, open sign, hours of operation, etc. Since these things are almost always functional necessities, I was surprised that they weren’t included in the mockups.

Just curious if book designers take that into consideration while designing.

JF

on 21 Aug 09

Robby: The publisher’s imprint will be on the spine, not the front/back cover. Price won’t be on the cover either – it’ll be on the inside flap. A bar code will go on the back because it has to go on the back.

Cover looks great! Just placed a pre-order for my whole team on Amazon. Looking forward to it.

WOW. What’s "fire the workaholics/emulate drug dealers" about?

Really curious.

The back cover looks really great, and I love the clean, mostly empty covers. Great job guys; I’ll be sure to pick up a copy.

Great design, very... Swiss inspired?

Congrats, very good start,

Looks great. Just curious, will there be a Kindle version of this book? If so, I’m also kind of curious what that process actually entails. Does the book have to be released (hardback) first?

I want to pre-order it, but would rather get it on the Kindle if possible. Thanks!

Dan

on 21 Aug 09

Why did you switch from Lulu.com?

Anonymous Coward

on 21 Aug 09

Why is Amazon giving a 32% discount on a book that you can’t even buy yet?

I wonder if Bezos and it’s investment in 37signals has a part in that.

Christophe Franco

on 21 Aug 09

I see there will be an audio CD version too... Who’s doing the reading ?

BTW, for the issue with the bar code on the back cover, maybe a sticker would have been a solution ? I know a small publisher here in France that refuses to print the bar codes directly on the books covers, so they print it on a sticker that is put on the cover (easy to peel off once you’ve bought the book, and they also don’t put the stickers on the books they are selling by themselves, only on those that are sent to bookshops)

JF

on 21 Aug 09

Christophe: Yeah, it might be a barcode sticker instead of a direct print. I don’ t know the specifics yet. We’d obviously prefer a sticker.

Sebastian Dadał

I want it. Now.

No option to buy a PDF version? Shame on you. I really hope you guys offer a PDF version in the near future.

Aaron

on 21 Aug 09

I too would prefer the Kindle version.

Greg

on 21 Aug 09

Congratulations guys! Can’t wait to read it. I know you’ve poured your heart and soul into this. Seeing the cover design makes me realize Amazon needs a color Kindle to win my business. What a shame it would be to only see it in 16 shades of gray. (Assuming there will be a Kindle version)

James

How / where can I buy the audio version? There is an audio version I hope??

Having a blurb from that charlatan Godin makes me less likely to consider buying it.

Justin Reese

on 21 Aug 09

So glad the book has a Title and not a Title: With a Clever Subtitle That Explains Everything Because God Forbid We Be Left in Suspense.

Beautiful design!

Scott

on 21 Aug 09

Striking design, looks fantastic. I do wonder about the image on the cover. I assume it’s supposed to be crumpled paper which brings to mind those sitcom scenes with the writer tossing out idea after idea? It might be the low resolution, but it looks so soft that at first glance it looks like a used tissue. I think this compounded by the fact that it has no writing or characters on it, and hence doesn’t imply throwing out work already done (the first step to doing rework?). I’m sure you guys labored over this, but I thought I’d throw in my $.02.

Ricky Irvine

on 21 Aug 09

I’m pumped about this.

Ray Drainville

Rob V

Definitely even more excited about this book now. Can’t wait. The only thing I don’t like about this design is the Seth Godin quote, I’m over him, and besides, I think it detracts from the over all message.

JP

on 21 Aug 09

Marcus,

I really hope you’re kidding. 37Signals doesn’t owe you shit.

With that being said, I can’t wait to read this book. I LOVED Getting Real.

I find it slightly interesting that the 37signals logo isn’t featured.

mj1531

on 21 Aug 09

I second Marcus Brito’s comment on wanting a PDF version of the book.

If you’re trying to evolve the way business can be done, you should want to make it easier for employees to sneak it in to their workplaces. I’d prefer to read the book at work and my cubicle is not conducive to reading physical books (or a Kindle) undetected.

You can even password protect the PDF and/or put the purchaser’s name on the bottom of each page to cut down on piracy.

Ed Knittel

on 21 Aug 09

I submitted by pre-order. I can’t tell you the last time I purchased a book so I consider this to be particularly interesting to me.

Congrats, guys.

Congratulations. Two questions:

- How is the content different than Getting Real?

- Why did you dump the direct sale PDF distribution? In the past you made plenty of noise that publishing dead tree books was the way of the past and direct sale PDFs were the future. What changed your mind?

JF

on 21 Aug 09

Getting Real was primarily about software development.

Rework is primarily about starting, running, building, growing (or not growing) a business.

There are some shared ideas between the books, but Rework was written from scratch. It’s a new book.

JF

We don’t have plans to release Rework as a PDF, but we do expect a Kindle version, audio versions, and possibly other non-traditional versions. It’s just too early to give any specifics.

Dangit, why couldn’t you guys have said "ASAP is poison" five years ago?! This is probably the part where you tell me you did.

I know what it is to write a book and I can figure it out how excited are you guys.

I know for sure that will be a hit like Maverick, wrote by my Brazilian fellow Ricardo Semler. Now he is one of the most influential person in business.

Jason, I think that you already is, but after this book.. the sky is the limit.

Congrats and thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!!

JF

Thanks for the well-wishes Fernando. Do you know Ricardo Semler personally? I’d love to get an intro – he’s been a big inspiration.

Matthew Savage

on 22 Aug 09

Congratulations guys, I cant wait to read this new book – I read Getting Real online and liked it so much I decided I wanted the print copy.

Given there’s no full synopsis available at the moment I can only go on what I’ve read on your previous posts that this will be about Entrepreneurship, how you built your business etc – will there be anything in there which will become stale while the publishing process happens?

It would be great if your publisher could offer something like the Beta PDF books that Pragmatic do, that way we could get our hands on it now and receive the real thing when its printed..

But that aside, great work!

Steven

on 22 Aug 09

The book has had a pretty phenomenal rise through the ranks today, jumping about 415,000 places in a matter of hours. As Flo would say, power to the people.

Steve

on 22 Aug 09

Were you intentionally going for a 3D effect, especially on the back of the book? Stereograms and 3D movies don’t really work for me-they just don’t jump out at me-but the red words on your cover really float in the air for me and the grey ones recede into the background.

Just wondering if anyone else sees the 3D. On the other hand, it may be that I’m seeing things because I’m reading this at 3:00 in the morning.

Gothy

keep on doing your great job and spreading your philosophy :)

Jason Klug

on 22 Aug 09

Wondering about the Seth Godin quote on the cover... isn’t that the same that appeared in/on "Getting Real"? Was that intentional, coincidence, or simply a working quote in a cover mockup?

Terry Schmidt

on 22 Aug 09

Really looking forward to this book!

Anonymous Coward

on 22 Aug 09

Much more confident to skip the quote, especially one as bland and non-unique as that.

Also, who has written the book? According to Wikipedia only one founder remains. Do you consider all "signals" to be founders or—to put it another way— who are the founders?

(Just looking at it with a critical eye, aesthetically it’s beautiful.)

Davi

on 22 Aug 09

If the cover was just pure black, I would still buy it.

Pre-ordered +1

Unfortunately I am not a close friend. But, I am a big fan too and I think that his corporative culture has so much in common with 37Signals.

Probably you know that, but for others that don ́t know him, Mr. Ricardo Semler is quite unique because he is life-oriented business man opposite to be business-oriented.

Right now, he works 4 hours week. He does not know personally all the CEO of his companies. His home office is called the Castle of Glass surround of forest. He does not have dinner meetings, only lunches. Because he wants to be early at home to be with his kids.

Off-course, he is rich enough to do that. Although, some wealthier people just don ́t have time be with their kids.

His vision certainly changed my metrics to measure wealth.

John Frankson

on 23 Aug 09

I love how you try to make 37Signals more than it is. Dude, you develop lightweight web apps and that’s all. Taking advice from Seth Godin is a stupid idea – what has he done in the last 10 years? Anyone can teach, but it’s harder to do.

All of your "anti" bullshit is transparent as hell. Trying to stand for something. No wonder you guys are stuck at 15 employees. You have a small-time attitude and so do you employees.

I’d sell out while you can. Oh wait, no one wants to buy a suite of bullshit apps that can be remade in a few weeks.

Too bad, so sad.

Bartek

on 23 Aug 09

@John Frankson: Maybe you are a troll indeed, but I find one thing quite amusing. When you know 37signals, their values, what they stand for, how well they teach others and how good their apps are... your comment sounds quite sarcastic :)

Anonymous Coward
