How to install apps (APKs) on Timmkoo devices (Q5 & Q3E):

1) Download SP Flash Tool on your computer: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/jl2a4r8y9af8j/SP+Flash+Tool

2) Download LithiumOS ROM/firmware and extract it on your computer (there should be four files).

3) Flash the Lithium firmware to the device, using this guide by @Munk.3: https://xdaforums.com/t/tmmkoo-q5-q...dates-downloads-first-release-1-5-24.4643981/

DOWNLOAD LINKS AT BOTTOM OF PAGE!!!

4) Power on the device (this may take up to two minutes, longer in some cases)

5) Obtain the APKs of the apps you would like to install. You can either do this on your Timmkoo, or on another device and copy the APKs to your Timmkoo Internal Storage/SD Card (if applicable). Although not necessary, I recommend you rename these files - for example, if an APK you downloaded was named "Chrome_81.1_arm_(apkdownload.com).apk" or something, I would recommend you rename it to just "Chrome.apk" for simplicity. Also, check that your APKs are compatible with your device.*

6) Launch the "Root Explorer" app on your Timmkoo. Locate the desired APK files on your device, and copy them (tap and hold file(s) > Copy). Switch to the other tab, and navigate to Root > data > app (/data/app) - and paste the files (tap the circular "Copy Here" button in the bottom right corner). When prompted for root access after tapping "Copy Here", tap "Grant" to allow Root Explorer to copy to the /data/app directory. Select the newly-copied APKs (tap and hold to select) then tap the "More" menu icon (three dots, in the top right corner), then Permissions, then in the "ENTER OCTAL" field, enter "644" (or "0644" if 4 digits are available).

7) (OPTIONAL) Reboot your TImmkoo device. Usually, after copying your APK files to /data/app, their icons will appear on your device’s home screen shortly after. However, sometimes they do not appear immediately, or experience issues when launching. In such rare cases, rebooting your device is required - I usually choose to do this anyway after installing new apps, just to avoid needing to do it later.

8) Enjoy your new apps!

*Ensuring compatibility of APKs: when searching for APKs to download, make sure to find a version of the desired app compatible with Android 4.4.2 (KitKat) - this is usually denoted on APK download sites by "Min SDK version: 4.4.2 KitKat (API 19)" or similar). APPS FOR NEWER ANDROID VERSIONS THAN THIS WILL NOT WORK. Usually (in nearly all cases), if an app is compatible with Android 4.4.2 will install with no issues on the Timmkoo. However, occasionally apps will be listed as compatible with Android 4.4.2 yet crash when launching on the Timmkoo, even after setting its permissions to 644 (if an app crashes, MAKE SURE you have set the correct permissions - 644 - and if this still doesn’t work, set them to 777, reboot the device and try launching the app again. When this happens, you need to find a version of the app older than the one you have found - when an app crashes, older versions of the same app work 90% of the time.

Here is my recommendation for finding a suitable older version of the same app: navigate to an APK download site, such as APKMirror, APKCombo or UpToDown. Find the page of the app you would like to install. Then navigate to "All versions", "Older versions" or similar. Then scroll down (you may need to navigate through several pages) until you start seeing versions compatible with Android 4.4.2. Once you’ve found one, check that there are no prior versions of the same app that have a minimum Android version higher than 4.4.2. If there is, the version you are looking at probably is not compatible with 4.4.2 (even though it says it is). Instead, keep scrolling through until you find a version of the app compatible with 4.4.2, with no prior versions requiring a higher Android version.

If you follow this and your selected app version still crashes, then your best option is to conduct a web search for "latest version of [app name] compatible with Android 4.4.2". If the app is moderately popular, you will likely find a correct answer - then search for an APK matching the version number you found online and install that.

NOTE: A good, easy way to test an app’s compatibility is to try opening the APK on the device. If the app icon and name show up, and it asks you "Do you want to install this app" - then the app is likely to be compatible (not definitely, but likely). However, if instead you get an error message saying "Unable to parse the package" or similar, the app is definitely not compatible and you need to find another version.

REMEMBER: Some apps just aren’t compatible, and won’t work on the TImmkoo no matter what you do - when this happens, I’m afraid there just really isn’t much you can do! (This is rare of course. And bear in mind that Android 4.4.2 is quite old now; many apps have been developed long after 4.4.2’s release (and end of support) - and are not compatible.

No, this is incorrect.

1) Why the advert at the bottom? No one is gonna click it.

2) Trust me, I would not have gone to the effort of developing a whole new ROM (using countless hours and relentless work), if this was possible any other known way. This is the most locked-down Android device ever (prove me wrong, anyone?)

Best wishes, N =)

theres is another known way...

on moonreader, set the dictionary to "other installed apps" (any app will do)
then go to / from moonreader's files, and make a new folder called "data/data/com.flyersoft.moonreaderp"
that should put you into moonreader private app folder
go to the shared_prefs and find dict.intent0 or dict.intent1, you will see that it has package name and activity name
now copy it out somewhere and edit it to the activity you want then copy back in
try to start the dictionary, it shold start whatever you used

apps with shells: CDS info (shows you stdout), mtk logger
(i just bricked my timmkoo so i cant check the package and activity names, if someone uses my method can they post)

both cds info and mtklogger have r/w permissions in /data
the rest is shell commands:

cp "path/to/apk.apk" "/data/app/yourapp.apk"
chmod 644 "/data/app/yourapp.apk"

I think there are some restrictions on the name of the apk file, like it doesn't install if it has space. if anyone knows more please say. to be safe just use something like "1.apk"
if the app doesn't install after a minute, reboot. if it still doesnt install, then it probably doesnt work and you can delete it using :
rm "/data/app/yourapp.apk"

that said, if i had a pc i would flash your custom rom

Hi @0xfffe,

This is interesting! Would you mind explaining this again if you have a bit more time? Also - how did you brick your device? I might be able to help with that - devices with MTK chips are practically impossible to permanently brick (that's why they're wonderful!).

Hi Oswald,

I haven't been online here in a short while so I never had the chance to see your message requesting a change to my signature. No worries, however, I hadn't been aware of that but that's fine by me.

I just have one question - how do you mean by developers' "own development threads" - do you mean, if a dev creates an official thread for a ROM they make, say - would that count as a development thread if it's actively updated as the ROM is developed?

Apologies for the inconvenience, cheers, N :D

Hello and good afternoon, @NoahDomingues

I apologise for my very delayed response but real life kept me too busy to reply in time.

Affirmative, an "own development thread" is a thread created by a developer, in which own code is published and complying with rule no. 12 of the forum rules and if applicable XDA GPL policy.

Hi, would you mind making a video or giving a more detailed explanation on how to do this?
Also do you need a pc to access the files

That is interesting. It might be that there was a first gen version that had the 4.4.2 version, but when they re-released the all the Timmkoos (Q5, Q3E) they might have also re-released the Q8. (Just a thought.)
I certainly think that's possible, the timeline is a bit confusing though

Hey guys, here with a step by step how to do it through Moonreader.
1- Go into MoonReader, open a file, any file
2- Hold down on any word, and select the "More"option, and click Customize
3- Set Dict. 1 to Other Installed Apps, choose any app
4- Then, go the main Moonreader page, and swipe to the left, until you see the folder view, AKA My Files
5- Click on the /, and create a new folder named data/data/com.flyersoft.moonreaderp
6- This will bring you to the inside files of the app, find the folder named "shared_prefs", enter it and find the file named "dict.intent0", copy it to somewhere else that you can edit it, your phone, computer, etc., and change the first two lines of code to 1- com.mediatek.engineermode and the second line com.mediatek.engineermode.EngineerMode, LEAVE THE BOTTOM AS IS. Note- you can edit it using any text editor, just rename the file to dict.intent0, and transfer it back to your Timmkoo
7- Next can be a bit complicated, but follow along closely and it should work, put your new dict.intent0 file, in any folder on your device. Now, go back into Moonreader files, go back to /, find your file, I like going through "storage/emulated/0", copy your edited file, go back to /, again create a folder called data/data/com.flyersoft.moonreaderp, and go in to shared_prefs, delete the old dict.intent0 file, and paste your new one
8- Now, go back to your file, hold down on a word, and tap on Dict, you should see engineer mode, swipe until you're in Logging and Debugging, and open MTKLogger
9- Click the Settings on the top right, go into Run Command, now make sure you have your APK file ready, I like putting them in an easy location, such as Alarms, on the Device Storage.
10- When your in the Run Command Window, put in the following text - cp "path/to/apk.apk" "/data/app/yourapp.apk"
chmod 644 "/data/app/yourapp.apk" - I will give an example, I always put my apk's in ALarms, and put in the following command, cp /storage/emulated/0/Alarms/Filename.apk /data/app/Filename.apk
chmod 644 /data/app/Filename.apk This can work in any folder you choose, but for your ease of access, use a simple one, like alarms, or create your own called APK or whatever. NOTE, keep your filenames short, like numbers or letters, if not you make mistakes while entering the name in MTKLogger
11- Click OK, go back to the main MTKLogger, and click the start button, then go back into Settings , click Run Command, click OK, wait a minute and your app should install and pop up on your screen!
That should be it, LMK if you have any questions, I found this method very easy to do once you get used to it.

I’s redout there just really is’t much you can do! (C'est rare bien sûr. Et gardez à l'esprit qu'Android 4.4.2 est assez vieux maintenant; de nombreuses applications ont été développées longtemps après la sortie de 4.4.2’s (et la fin du support) - et ne sont pas compatibles.
