Minor Characters in Harry Potter: Our Top 10

1. Hedwig: I mean...is any character better than Hedwig? We don’t think so! Hedwig is Harry’s beloved snowy owl, whom he receives from Hagrid before his first year at Hogwarts. The sassy but affectionate Hedwig remains Harry’s primary link to the wizarding world during his melancholy summers with the Dursleys. (And we don’t talk about what happened to her in the last book.)

2. Lily Potter: Lily Potter literally used love to save her son’s life and ensure his protection...what more could any of us ask for? Before sacrificing her life for Harry’s, Lily was an extremely talented and kind Muggle-born witch. She was in the Gryffindor house at Hogwarts, where she met James Potter, and later went on to join the Order of the Phoenix and bravely fight against Lord Voldemort.

3. Seamus Finnigan: Seamus is everyone’s favorite Irish wizard! As a member of Gryffindor house, Seamus has an easy-going and affable personality...and he also has a so-called "penchant for pyrotechnics." In other words, everything he touches seems to explode! He’s also known for being besties with Dean Thomas (an honorable mention in this list) and valiantly fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts.

4. Nymphadora Tonks: Tonks, while a late addition to the Harry Potter series, is a fan favorite due to her wit, bravery, and endearing clumsiness. She’s a shape-shifting Auror who can change her appearance at will, although she usually does it to serve the Order of the Phoenix and rebel against Lord Voldemort. Her love story with Remus Lupin is also a notable part of her character arc—as is her selfless sacrifice at the Battle of Hogwarts to ensure a better future for her newborn son.

5. Nearly Headless Nick: Officially known as Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpinton, Nearly Headless Nick is the ghost of Gryffindor house. He’s friendly, charming, and elegant, with a fear of death that kept him tied to the Gryffindor Tower even after his head was (almost nearly) cut off in a botched execution.

6. Garrick Ollivander: Ollivander is one of the first wizards that Harry meets, as Harry visits Ollivander’s shop in Diagon Alley to receive his first wand. Ollivander’s belief that "the wand chooses the wizard" makes him an icon in the wizarding world, as does his fine craftsmanship, flawless memory, and eccentric personality.

7. Madame Olympe Maxine: Madame Maxine is the giantesque headmistress of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, the French wizarding school that visits Hogwarts to participate in the Triwizard Tournament. She becomes a key love interest for Hagrid, and the two even embark on a courageous mission together to visit the giant colonies on Dumbledore’s behalf.

8. Cho Chang: Ahh, Harry’s first love—who could forget! Aside from being the first kiss of The Boy Who Lived, Cho has numerous other accomplishments and interests. She’s a popular and intelligent Ravenclaw student, as well as a talented seeker on the Quidditch field and a dedicated member of Dumbledore’s Army.

9. Lee Jordan: Lee Jordan is a Gryffindor wizard who’s best known as the commentator for the liveliest of Quidditch matches. Lee’s charismatic and bombastic personality makes him a dynamic reporter on the field—he gives a humorous play-by-play that’s (heavily) biased in favor of his own house. Later on, he becomes the host of Potterwatch, an underground radio show that spreads encouragement and important information about the resistance during the reign of Lord Voldemort.

10. Colin Creevey: Colin has an infectious enthusiasm (and slightly grating) personality that meshes well with his identity as a Harry Potter superfan. As a student, Colin is always seen wielding a camera and trying to snap a shot of his famous classmate—he’s eventually petrified by the Basilisk while trying to catch a photo of Tom Riddle’s serpentine weapon. As he grows older, Colin continues with this heroic streak, becoming a member of Dumbledore’s Army and sacrificing his life in the Battle of Hogwarts.
