Prove AFCI protection through testing and certification

An arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) is a device that lessens the effects of arcing faults by de-energizing the circuit when an arc fault is detected. These arcing faults, if allowed to continue, may pose a risk of fire ignition under certain conditions.

Our proven expertise in safety science and engineering enables us to serve the entire personal protection industry, including receptacle GFCI, portables and circuit breakers. One certification process allows you to profit from faster speed to market. This streamlined and accelerated process saves time and money through a well-proven global certification program. Our extensive, flexible service portfolio covers research and development, Global Market Access, installation and end use.

AFCI requirements for Global Market Access

AFCIs are evaluated to the following standards for compliance and safety:

  • U.S. – UL 1699, the Standard for Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupters
  • Canada – CSA C22.2 NO. 270

The most common AFCIs covered by these standards are as follows:

  • Receptacle AFCI - Outlet Brand Circuit (OBC) AFCI
  • Circuit Breaker AFCI (This is also is investigated to UL 489 Edition 13, the Standard for Molded-Case Circuit Breakers, Molded-Case Switches, and Circuit-Breaker Enclosures.)

AFCIs are intended for use in dwelling units. The maximum rating for noncord types are 20 A 120 V AC, 60 HZ circuits or 120/240 Vac or 208Y/120 V three-phase systems. Cord AFCIs are rated up to 30 A.

New requirements to harmonize the differences between TIL M-02A and CSA-C22.2 No. 270-16 are effective as of May 23, 2019. We offer preliminary investigation services, as well as traditional evaluation and certification services, to help you evaluate and test in preparation for the release of these modified requirements.
