Infrastructure Lighting

Contact UL Solutions for all your street lighting and infrastructure lighting safety, reliability and performance testing needs.

Infrastructure lighting and smart solutions

Today, manufacturers, municipalities, transportation authorities and utilities are investing in smart lighting and control solutions for all types of street and municipal lighting — including roadways, walkways, bridges and tunnels, parking garages and more. Modern stakeholders recognize the value of advanced capabilities that enhance efficiency, safety and sustainability.

Helping drive this growth, UL Solutions — trusted and recognized around the globe — provides safety testing and certification, measurement of performance and energy efficiency, global market access, and connected lighting security testing.

As new lighting projects include innovations such as LED, photovoltaic (PV) and solar technologies, key considerations include safety, functionality and resilience in harsh environments. Equally important is minimizing light pollution, light trespass and glare to help create responsible and effective illumination. Cost savings through rebate programs or energy-efficient systems that meet regulatory compliance standards around the globe, such as the DesignLights Consortium® (DLC) and its Qualified Products List (QPL), drive the need for performance testing.

Common requirements for infrastructure lighting

For global markets, the following standards and requirements are commonly used for roadway and streetlights:

  • CB certification per IEC 60598-2-3, which evaluates luminaires for road and street lighting
  • ENEC certification per EN 60598-2-3, which specifies requirements for luminaires that use tungsten filament, tubular fluorescent and other sources
  • ENEC+ certification per EN 62722-2-1; EN 62717 modified by ENEC, plus EPRS 001, 002, which concern roadway, pole-mounted luminaires
  • IEC TR 62778 photobiological test, which evaluates the photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems
  • EN 62338, a photobiological evaluation of roadway luminaires
  • IEC 62471, a photobiological risk evaluation of lamps and lamp systems, including LEDs
  • EMC+EMF: EN 55015; EN 61000-3-2; EN 61000-3-3; EN 61574; EN 62493, which evaluate the electromagnetic compatibility of lighting equipment

Regional specifiers like the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), as well as many other municipalities, have developed their own performance-based specifications that include:

  • Ingress protection (IP) testing per IEC 60529
  • Impact protection (IK) testing per IEC 62262
  • Vibration testing per ANSI C136.31
  • ISO 9227, salt spray (corrosion) test

Whatever the application, manufacturers, municipalities and specifiers recognize and trust the UL Mark on lighting products. Our global team can help you stay ahead of the curve on new and evolving regulations and industry standards.
