Our history
Decades of TI innovation
Geophysical Service Inc., a small oil and gas company, opened in 1930.
The founders’ entrepreneurial spirit, vision and innovation laid a solid foundation for Texas Instruments today.
We began applying signal processing technologies to submarine detection, then radar, leading us to create an electronics equipment lab and manufacturing unit in 1946.
We became Texas Instruments Inc., entering the industry by inventing the silicon transistor in 1954.
In 1958, TI engineer Jack Kilby invented the integrated circuit, paving the way for modern electronics.
We developed the first electronic hand-held calculator in 1967 and focused on developing faster, smaller and more powerful TI chips.
The Apollo Lunar Exploration Module containing TI components landed on the moon during this decade.
In 1971, we introduced the first single-chip microcontroller (MCU), transforming appliances, consumer electronics and industrial applications.
The Speak & Spell was invented in 1978, which contained the industry’s first chip with digital signal processing (DSP) logic. DSPs have laid the foundation for modern day edge AI technology.
In 1980, we debuted our first commercial single-chip DSP and a microprocessor optimized for high-speed digital signal processing.
In 1985, the digital micromirror device, the DLP® chip was invented, which serves as the foundation for award-winning DLP technology (Emmy® 1998) and DLP Cinema® (Academy® Plaque 2009).
1992 marked the creation of our MSP430TM MCU – a family of MCUs designed for their low cost and power efficiency.
We introduced the first applications processor designed for mobile phones (OMAP) in 1999.
In 2008 we announced Kilby Labs, our center of innovation designed to foster creative ideas for breakthrough semiconductor technology.
In 2011, we introduced the industry’s first micro power boost charger for energy harvesting applications and created the first inductance-to-digital converter in 2013.
Changed the way we drive and enhanced safety on the road in 2017 with the world's most precise mmWave portfolio based on CMOS.
2024 was a year for more power in smaller spaces and we introduced the industry's first integrated magnetic packaging - MagPackTM technology.
From the world smallest microcontroller, the first 48V integrated hot-swap eFuse to the first functionally isolated modulators for robots, 2025 was a year for product innovation.
