Population for Japan
[Total Population]
- The total population was 127,083 thousand, and decreased by 215 thousand compared with the previous year. The rate of decrease was 0.17 percent. The total population decreased for the fourth year in a row.
- The male population was 61,801 thousand, a decrease of 109 thousand (0.18 percent), while the female population was 65,282 thousand, a decrease of 106 thousand (0.16 percent).
- The natural change of the male population was negative for tenth years in a row, and that of the female population was negative for sixth years in a row.
- The migration change of Japanese population was negative for fourth years in a row, and that of foreign population was positive for second years.

[Population by Age Group]
- The population aged 0 to 14 (child population) was 16,233 thousand (12.8 percent of the total population).
- The population aged 15 to 64 (productive-age population) was 77,850 thousand (61.3 percent of the total population).
- The population aged 65 and over (aged population) was 33,000 thousand (26.0 percent of the total population).
Population by Prefecture

- The top five prefectures in population were Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Osaka-fu, Aichi-ken and Saitama-ken. These prefectures account for 36.2 percent of the total population.
- Tokyo-to had the largest population in 2014 (10.5 percent of the total population).
[Rates of Population Change]
- The population increased in 7 prefectures. Tokyo-to had the highest rate of increase in population.
- The population decreased in 40 prefectures. Akita-ken had the highest rate of decrease in population.

[Population by Age Group]
- The percentage of the child population was the highest in Okinawa-ken and lowest in Akita-ken.
- The percentage of the productive-age population was the highest in Tokyo-to and lowest in Shimane-ken.
- The percentage of the aged population was the highest in Akita-ken and lowest in Okinawa-ken, and it increased in all prefectures.
