Population for Japan

[Total Population]

  • The total population was 127,799 thousand, and decreased by 259 thousand compared with the previous year. The rate of decrease was 0.20 percent.
  • The male population was 62,184 thousand, a decrease of 144 thousand (0.23 percent), while the female population was 65,615 thousand, a decrease of 115 thousand (0.17 percent).
  • The natural change of the male population decreased for seven years, and that of the female population decreased for three years.
  • The migration change of Japanese population decreased, and that of foreign population decreased for three years with the record-high rate.

[Population by Age Group]

  • The population aged 0 to 14 (child population) was 16,705 thousand (13.1 percent of the total population).
  • The population aged 15 to 64 (productive-age population) was 81,342 thousand (63.6 percent of the total population).
  • The population aged 65 and over (aged population) was 29,752 thousand (23.3 percent of the total population).

Population by Prefecture

  • The top five prefectures in population were Tokyo-to, Kanagawa-ken, Osaka-fu, Aichi-ken and Saitama-ken. These prefectures account for 35.7 percent of the total population.
  • Tokyo-to had the largest population in 2011 (10.3 percent of the total population).

[Rates of Population Change]

  • The population increased in 7 prefectures. Okinawa-ken had the highest rate of increase in population.
  • The population decreased in 40 prefectures. Fukushima-ken had the highest rate of decrease in population.

[Population by Age Group]

  • The percentage of the child population was the highest in Okinawa-ken and lowest in Akita-ken and Tokyo-to.
  • The percentage of the productive-age population was the highest in Tokyo-to and lowest in Shimane-ken.
  • The percentage of the aged population was the highest in Akita-ken and lowest in Okinawa-ken.
  • The percentage of the aged population exceeded that of the child population in all prefectures except for Okinawa-ken.
