Certificate in Molecular Pathology Modules
The RCPA’s Molecular Pathology Certification Modules for Anatomical Pathology has been revised to futureproof this rapidly evolving subdiscipline of anatomical pathology.
The changes came into effect in February 2025 and are reflected in the updated Anatomical Pathology Handbook.
Key updates:
- AP Modules 1 and 3a have been combined into ‘Somatic NGS’ and 3b and 4 into a ‘Germline NGS’ modules (which reduces the number of steps from four to two)
- The portfolio requirements for the somatic module have been reduced but the curriculum and standard required remains the same as module 3a
- All full module 3a, 3b and 4 holders will be automatically converted
- Fellows already holding module 1 or partial module 3a will retain their existing scope.
Recognition of prior learning APPLICATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED
The changes simplify and clarify the process for molecular pathology certification, resulting in the discontinuation of recognition of prior learning (RPL). All candidates will now need to pursue the training and assessment pathway and pass the annual exam.
Enrolled module 1 Trainees will be able to sit the last module 1 exam in November 2025 or may choose to sit the new Somatic NGS module.
Further information
More information about the changes can be found in our frequently asked questions and if you need more help, please reach out to the RCPA’s education team via email [email protected]
The Training and Assessment Pathway is offered to those who require upskilling in molecular/genomic methods within their discipline. Requirements for this pathway will be fulfilled through attainment of competency, rather than by a defined training time, with appropriate supervision and both formative and summative assessments. Please refer to the 'Registration Section' of the Handbook for further details pertaining to registration and the examination application process. If you require further information, please contact the College at [email protected].
