Justice Minister Visited the United States of America
Justice Minister Yamashita visited New York and Washington DC from May 1 to 5, 2019.
New York
In New York, Minister Yamashita met with Mr. Antonio Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, and exchanged views on the importance of the 14th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which is to be held in Kyoto in 2020. The Minister also met with Ms. Ulrika Modeer and Ms. Asako Okai, assistant administrators of the United Nations Development Programme regarding legal technical assistance. The Minister expressed his hope that Secretary General Guterres would be able to participate in and address the Kyoto Congress.
In addition, the Minister visited the National September 11 Memorial Park, and expressed his sincere condolences.
Washington DC
In Washington DC, the Minister met with Mr. William Barr, Attorney General of the United States. They reaffirmed the commitment to strengthen the alliance between Japan and the United States in the field of justice affairs. The Minister extended an invitation to Attorney General Barr to participate in the Kyoto Congress.
Additionally, the Minister visited the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
