Average monthly total cash earnings per a regular employee of establishments with 5 or more regular employees in December 1998 were 709,384 yen decreased by 4.2% from the same month of the previous year .

Contractual cash earnings were 289,292 yen increased by 0.3% and scheduled cash earnings were 270,682 yen increased by 0.3%.

Real wage indices were decreased by 4.7%.

2 Hours Worked

Average monthly total hours worked per a regular employee of establishments with 5 or more regular employees in December 1998 were 156.1 hours decreased by 1.0% from the same month of the previous year .

Scheduled hours worked were 146.2 hours decreased by 0.7%.

Non-scheduled hours worked in manufacturing were 9.9 hours decreased by 5.8%. And seasonally adjusted figures were increased by 0.5% from the previous month.

3 Employment

Average employment of regular employees of establishments with 5 or more regular employees in December 1998 were decreased by 0.4% from the same month of the previous year , full-time employees were decreased by 1.1%, part-time employees were increased by 3.1%.

Average employment of regular employees by main industries were decreased 2.4% in Manufacturing, decreased by 0.7% in Wholesale and Retail Trade, Eating and Drinking Place, and increased by 1.3% in Services.
