Energy and Environment Policy

Aiming to promote the research and development and dissemination of technologies for energy efficiency and for the transition to non-fossil energy, the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy (ANRE) and the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) have formulated Technology Strategy for Energy Efficiency and Transition to Non-Fossil Energy 2024, a compilation that presents specific details of critical technological fields that are necessary to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Overview of the strategy

ANRE and NEDO have been formulating the Energy Efficiency Technology Strategy since 2007 as guidelines on energy efficiency technologies that Japan should develop, introduce, and disseminate.

The global community has been accelerating efforts for decarbonization to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. In addition, the decision document released at COP28 held in 2023 contained a commitment to double the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements every year until 2030. To achieve even greater energy efficiency and decarbonization, Japan should advance discontinuous technological innovation and social implementation on the basis of innovation in addition to its efforts for energy efficiency that it has been continuing to date.

In response to this situation, ANRE and NEDO formulated Technology Strategy for Energy Efficiency and Transition to Non-Fossil Energy 2024. The strategy identifies and prioritizes fields in which Japan should make efforts for effectively promoting the dissemination of technological development and shows specific technologies as critical technologies, thereby providing guidelines for planning and designing both NEDO’s support measures under the subsidy project* and companies’ R&D projects, which will encourage companies to develop and commercialize their technologies.
