External Economic Policy

On March 25 (Mon.), 2024, Mr. Hosaka Shin, Vice-Minister for International Affairs, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and Mr. Li Fei, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), China, held a regular consultation at the vice-minister level in Tokyo. This was the 21st such consultation, first inaugurated in 1990.

At the consultation, the two sides exchanged views on bilateral economic cooperation between Japan and China. Japan requested that China improve the business environment for foreign companies in China (e.g., correction of its preferential treatment policy for domestic products, exemption of a short-term business visa for overseas nationals, and legal systems related to data) and ensure the appropriate operation of its export control system. In addition, Japan reiterated the safety of the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea and other issues and urged China to immediately repeal its import restriction measures on Japanese foods.

Moreover, the two sides exchanged views on the possibility for further collaboration between Japan and China in global discussions, including the WTO.

The two sides agreed that Japan and China will continue to have close communication, taking advantage of various future opportunities.
