The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has released the 2023 version of its annual White Paper on International Economy and Trade, which was presented to the Cabinet on June 27, 2023.

Highlights of the White Paper

The 2023 White Paper on International Economy and Trade focuses on the following two pillars, analyzing international economic trends and policies of overseas countries that may have impacts on trade.

As the first pillar, the paper, through the analysis of international economic trends, presents the current status of the global economy, which is facing a crisis of division, and the importance of efforts for striking a balance between the free and fair-trade order and economic security in order to overcome the crisis.

As the second pillar, the paper, through an analysis focusing on Japan, uncovers the fact that as the geopolitical and economic security environment becomes increasingly challenging, Japanese companies are shifting their prioritized investment targets from China to ASEAN economies and India, and that there is growing momentum for a return to domestic production. In view of this, it explains the urgent need to establish reliable supply chains and also the importance of reducing dependency on imports of mineral fuels and of strengthening earning power by promoting corporate globalization in the face of the largest trade deficit in history.
