Japanese

April 25, 2023

External Economic Policy

For two days from April 24 to 25, 2023, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) of the Republic of Korea (ROK) held a Japan-Korea Export Control Policy Dialogue in Japan.

For two days from April 24 to 25, 2023, METI and MOTIE held a Japan-Korea Export Control Policy Dialogue in Japan.

In this policy dialogue, METI, based on the opinion exchanges in the recent series of policy dialogues, conducted a further in-depth review of the current state of operation of the list control and the catch-all control and the effectiveness thereof in the ROK. Moreover, METI and MOTIE discussed ideal approaches to engaging in regular opinion exchanges in the future and other issues.

Furthermore, the ROK stated that a revision of the existing public notice to define Japan as a country falling under the "Ka area (former Ka-1 area)" under its system would enter into force on April 24, 2023.

*Note: In September 2019, the ROK defined Japan as a country falling under the "Ka-2 area." As a result, the country reinforced restrictions on the procedure for issuing permission for exports from the ROK to Japan.

In this policy dialogue, the two sides agreed that Japan and the ROK would continue to hold such dialogues concerning the respective export control systems and their operation as a whole, including the issues that they discussed in the recent series of dialogues.
