On October 26 (Tue.) and 27 (Wed.), Mr. Ishii Masahiro, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, attended the 22nd Council of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi.

IRENA is an international organization inaugurated to promote the widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy. The IRENA Council is composed of 21 members elected from among the member states. Held twice a year, it is an important opportunity to discuss the directions for IRENA's undertakings. In 2021, it is being chaired by Japan. This time, it was held in Abu Dhabi on October 26 (Tue.) and 27 (Wed.). Topics discussed included the work program for 2022-2023 and the medium-term strategy for 2023-2027 toward promoting renewable energy.

State Minister Ishii served as chair. In his greeting address, he expressed his hope that IRENA will lead international discussions, and also stated that energy transition toward decarbonization is a task the international community should tackle together, and that the role of IRENA (in which 166 countries and regions worldwide participate) will become increasingly important in the future. He also stated that Japan will continue its efforts toward maximal introduction of renewable energy, reflecting the new targets announced for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
