IRENA is an international organization inaugurated to promote the widespread adoption and sustainable use of renewable energy. The IRENA Council is composed of 21 members elected from among the Member States. The Council, held twice a year, is an important opportunity for discussing directions of IRENA's undertakings. In 2021, it is being chaired by Japan. This time, it was held on May 25 (Tue.) and 26 (Wed.) via video conference. Topics discussed included the work program for 2022-2023 and medium-term strategy for 2023-2027 for the promotion of renewable energy.

On May 25 (Tue.), State Minister Ejima attended as a representative of the Japanese government. He spoke about efforts toward achieving a decarbonized society by 2050 and Japan's recent energy policies, and announced its intention to continue to contribute to IRENA's activities and other countries' efforts toward decarbonization through financial contributions, etc.

Mr. Washio Eiichiro, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, also attended and chaired this meeting.
