Browser Support for jsMath

The following browsers have been tested on the indicated platforms. Version numbers are the lowest numbers I have tested, but may not represent minimum usable versions (unless specifically indicted). Later versions should be fine.

Macintosh OS X:

Safari 1.1 and up Yes
Internet Explorer 5.2 Yes MSIE/Mac is pretty unstable and can crash with jsMath;
it is very buggy with jsMath on a page with lots of CSS;
see the bug list for more details.
Netscape 7.1 and up Yes 4.7 No
Mozilla 1.4 and up Yes
Firefox 0.8 and up Yes
Camino 0.7 and up Yes
OmniWeb 5.0 and up Yes 4.5 Mostly OmniWeb 4.5 does not handle the image-font fallback method well;
It sometimes helps to reload the page.
The spriteImageFonts plugin doesn't work with 4.5.
Global Mode doesn't work with any version of OmniWeb, and is disabled.
Opera 7.5 and up Yes 6.03 No The fallback unicode support in Opera 7.5 is very poor;
image-font mode works well instead.
There are some problems with sprintImageFonts.
9.5 Mostly Opera 9.5 gets confused if you scroll while
jsMath is processing the page.
iCab No

Windows:

Internet Explorer 5.5 and up Yes
Chrom 1.0 and up Yes
Netscape 7.1 and up Yes
Mozilla 1.6 and up Yes
Firefox 0.8 and up Yes Firefox 1.5.0.1 craches when used with jsMath v3.1a through 3.1c.
Opera 7.5 and up Yes The fallback unicode support in Opera 7.5 is very poor;
image-font mode works well instead.
There are some problems with sprintImageFonts, particularly with printing.
9.5 Mostly Opera 9.5 gets confused if you scroll while
jsMath is processing the page.

I don't have much Windows experience, so if you can verify that jsMath works or doesn't work with a particular Windows browser, please let me know.

Unix and Linux:

Mozilla Yes
Firefox Yes
Konqueror 3.3 Yes 3.1.4 Mostly

I do not have access to a unix or linux installation where I can test these, and only report the browsers that others have told me work. The TeX fonts are available in TrueType and Type1 forms for unix, so it should be possible to make jsMath work there. The instructions for installing the TeX fonts under unix may help you to set things up for jsMath on your installation.

The image font methods work fine for unix, and there is a generic fallback configuration for unicode fonts, but its quality will depend on the unicode fonts that you have available. I have not tuned it to any specific browser, so it may be possible to improve the performance for your browser/font combination.

Macintosh OS 9:

Mac OS 9 does not have very good support for unicode fonts, so it is unlikely that jsMath will ever work with Mac OS 9. It does not work with Netscape 4.7, and I have not tried to make it work with MSIE under Mac OS 9.
