Hi Bruce,
why don't you use contour as in the following ;-) 
contour(X,Y,Z,V)
# -> draw contour lines at the values specified in sequence *V*
like in
x, y = np.meshgrid(np.linspace(0, 1, 100), np.linspace(0, 1, 50))
z = x**4 - x**2 + np.sin(y)
contour(x, y, z, [-0.2, 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8])
