From: garrett@garnet.berkeley.edu (Garrett D'Amore) Subject: Telnet and Shadow Passwords Date: 8 Apr 1993 07:55:30 GMT
I've noticed a few problems:
1) Users using passwords longer than 8 characters (possible with shadow) can't
login using telnet. I suspect that telnet is truncating them after the 8th
character, which gives a totally different result from crypt! Has anybody
already fixed this, or should I do it myself? (I hate modifying someone
elses' source code -- never can be too sure what ramifications you may be
introducing!! :-) (My users and I use telnet a _LOT_, so it would be nice
if this worked properly :-)
2) finger -- I just downloaded the new version of finger from tsx-11, and the
good news is that it correctly includes phone & office info. The bad news is
that it doesn't reliably give the last login time. It appears to mostly work
for user root, but not for other users. Any ideas?
Thanks!
