Capacity Building Support for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Overview)

Mobile Cooperation Team (MCT) and the Japan Coast Guard Research Institute provided capacity-building support to MMEA personnel and others regarding "vessel paint flake analysis and identification" necessary for maritime law enforcement activities. During this deployment, they investigated procedures for forensic analysis to be accepted as criminal evidence within Malaysia, the current status of analytical equipment required for vessel paint flake analysis, and its potential applications in forensic science.

They also conducted practical training sessions to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for paint flake analysis.

This training program, implemented since 2022, aims to establish a paint flake analysis and identification system for materials such as MMEA.

It is conducted to enhance investigative and analytical expertise in maritime vessel collision incidents.

The JCG will continue to strengthen cooperation and collaboration with the coast guard agencies of other countries to realize a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, while also supporting capacity building for countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
