Summary: Huge amount of data exchange is expected between a large number of IoT devices for the development of Smart Cities. Various systems and technologies are used to connect these devices and to gather the generated data. LPWA systems are implemented in many countries and are being further developed in other countries. It is expected that smart cities will use several IoT connectivity technologies, and including several LPWA systems to collect data and control city environments. The LPWA systems are designed to address wide coverage area requirements with large number of connected devices and low power consumption capabilities. This can include various technologies (e.g. Ultra-Narrow Band technologies, Narrowband and broadband IMT-based technologies (e.g. NB-IoT, LTE-eMTC), RLAN-based technologies, spread spectrum technology, etc.), utilizing various licensed/dedicated, shared, etc. spectrum resources. Therefore, security, interoperability and identification aspects of LPWA systems are critical to be addressed in order to foster the deployment of IoT services and Smart Cities. This recommendation will investigate LPWA systems and their key characteristics and recommend security, interoperability and identification capabilities
