Introduction
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the Ten-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production (10YFP)/One Planet Network, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Training and Technology Transfer for the South American Region, Argentina (BCRC Argentina), and the Partnership for Action on Challenges relating to E-waste II (PACE II) are organizing
a side event on Towards a Global Framework for Digital Product Information Systems: Enhancing Sustainability and Traceability for the ICT sector that will take place on
Wednesday, 30 April 2025 from 18:40 to 19:45 at Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG).
This event is a side event to
the Meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions (CICG, Geneva, 28 April – 9 May 2025). The theme of the meetings and the high-level segment will be
"Make visible the invisible: sound management of chemicals and wastes."As the world faces increasing challenges related to e-waste and hazardous chemicals, this side event will highlight the potential of a global framework designed to harmonize Digital Product Information Systems (DPIS), with an emphasis on supporting traceability and transparency across the electronics value chain. The side event will focus on DPIS, also known as digital product passports (DPPs), and traceability platforms for e-waste management at the product level, emphasizing their role in advancing the sound management of chemicals and waste.
Objectives
This session will:

Showcase DPIS as innovative digital solutions that are advancing e-waste tracking, highlighting their potential to improve transparency and reduce harmful environmental impacts.
- Present the global framework for DPIS, including guidelines on the collection and use of data relevant to chemicals and waste management.
- Present existing ITU standards on DPIS also known as DPPs, circular economy, and e-waste, highlighting their relevance to the global framework for sustainable waste management.
- Present case studies on the use of DPIS and Extended Responsibility Policy Schemes.
- Promote the development of an inclusive DPIS framework by engaging diverse stakeholders.
- Consult with stakeholders involved in e-waste management, digitalization, chemical regulation, and sustainability on the need to have a global framework and its content.
Target Audience
This Side Event is open to all participants of the Meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions. Participation is free of charge.
