The Space Services Department (SSD) implements the regulatory and technical procedures of the Radio Regulations  related to space systems, earth stations and radio astronomy stations. It handles the processing, examination and publication of frequency assignment notices submitted by administrations, and issues cost recovery invoices for these notices. It establishes coordination requirements and ensures conformity with various coordination procedures.​​

The Department also manages the procedures for space related assignment or allotment Plans and maintains their master copies.

SSD manages the recording of frequency assignments to space systems, earth stations and radio astronomy stations in the Master International Frequency Register (MIFR).

The Department monitors and ensure the effective and precise deployment of satellites in geostationary and non-geostationary orbits in conformity with the Radio Regulations, and assists Administrations in the resolution of cases of harmful interference affecting space services, contributing to the ITU space sustainability activities.

The Department provides assi​stance and training to administrations and the whole ITU membership on all of the above issues.​​
