Given the massive interest surrounding artificial intelligence at present, it's not unreasonable to expect AI investments to top the list of priorities for modern IT organizations. Yet, data from this year's ITPro TodayIT Priorities Survey shows that this is not the case. AI comes in a distant second behind cybersecurity as the chief area of focus for IT teams today.

What's more, this year's report shows that investment in key types of AI technology has barely changed from 2024 , and in some respects has declined, despite the growing maturity of AI technology and sustained pressure on IT leaders to implement AI-powered solutions.

Taken together, these findings suggest that, although AI remains buzzworthy, more traditional types of technology domains — such as cybersecurity and cloud computing, another top focus for respondents to this year's survey — collectively exert more influence over 2025 IT trends.

Other notable areas of focus of this year's survey include:

  • Overall IT spending, which has not changed significantly from last year.

  • Remote work trends for IT pros, who were less likely to report being part of remote teams this year than in past years.

  • Cybersecurity investment trends, where AI-powered cybersecurity capabilities top the list of solutions that businesses are adopting — and where use of firewalls is decreasing.

  • The frequency of ransomware attacks, which is surprisingly low, and ransomware response strategies, which most often involve recovering data without paying a ransom.

  • Cloud deployment and architecture trends, where interest in hybrid cloud is surging while adoption of SaaS appears to be on the decline.

The following report analyzes these trends and presents the data behind them. It also explains what the facts say about how IT organizations are operating in today's landscape — which types of technology are driving the greatest transformation, which challenges pose the greatest barriers to innovation, and how IT professionals are planning for the future.
