2023 State of DevOps Report

Last year DevOps regained its footing after surviving serious pandemic and security challenges. In 2023, it stood confidently as a known and lasting methodology across industries, with 81% of developers claiming serious DevOps chops. There’s no doubt that DevOps is here to stay, but there’s plenty of uncertainty in how it finally steps forward.

The winds of change are making the direction that DevOps takes from here a bit uncertain. Potential disruptors, like generative AI models and related developer tools such as Code Interpreter, Copilot X, Kite, CodeT5, and OpenAI Codex, as well as other changes in the air, may set DevOps on a new path.

Looking ahead, it appears that DevOps is set for a surge. While an astonishing 81% of developers are competent in DevOps, company adoption rates appear sluggish. Only 9% of companies use DevOps exclusively and a mere 20% use it for more than half of developments, compared to 36% who don’t use DevOps at all. Persistent time and talent shortages, security concerns, and culture challenges continue to vex adoption rates. New technologies and significant pent-up expertise may finally break through those barriers.
