From tomorrow, the speed limit on the road beside my home will be reduced from 80kmh to 60kmh. It’s a narrow road right beside the Grand Canal, yet, until now, it has been perfectly legal to barrel along at speeds that make "falling into the canal" less a risk and more of an inevitability.

You might think this change – part of a much-needed national overhaul of rural speed limits across the country – was a rare victory for common sense. But no. My social media feed is a raging inferno of outrage.
