King is the eighth and final boss in Saros, located at the end of the Yellow Shore biome, and is the extremely powerful self-appointed ruler of Carcosan civilization. So how do you defeat it?
This page acts as a comprehensive breakdown of how to defeat the King boss in Saros, including what happens once you beat it.
How to Defeat King in Saros
Tip:
If you fire your Power Weapon or Overdrive at King and hit it whilst it's in the middle of an attack while unshielded, you can actually sometimes disrupt what would be the following attack in the pattern. This will give you a very brief reprieve if you need it to refocus or reposition Arjun to continue.
King’s weak point is in his head, so if you have Autohit disabled that is where you will want to focus the majority of your fire.
King - Phase 1
Right off the bat, you should know that King will repeatedly (and often) summon a yellow forcefield around him. This will require you to run up and use your newly upgraded Blazing Strike melee to break the shield and make him vulnerable again.
King can summon a giant spiral of blue projectiles that will hold in place around him for a second or two before they transform into homing projectiles that arc in toward you - a perfect absorption opportunity.
King will also make frequent use of a two stage attack. The first fires out multiple nova shockwave rings tightly packed together that you’ll need to jump over, quickly followed by the second stage; a blue projectile ring wall.
If you’re quick enough bring up your shield to absorb them, otherwise perform a dash through to get by unscathed. Yet more blue projectile attacks come in the form of two long projectile walls, one of each side of you which you can completely ignore, as King slowly flies toward you while firing out jagged blue projectiles from above (that don’t home in on you but blanket the area). Just run backward away from King to avoid all the elements of this attack.
Tip from Guide Writer Sam:
Something we’ve noticed with the attack detailed above is that if you remain relatively close to King after meleeing his shield, he’ll resort to this attack far more frequently than if you stay at a greater distance. Due to the fact that you can reliably avoid any damage during this attack by simply running backward, try to continually goad this attack and fire everything you have as you retreat to get in lots of free (or the closest to free you’ll get in this fight) hits.
Another is where King emits multiple consecutive horizontal and/or diagonal blue projectile waves. While the attack is visually intense, you can easily hold your shield up the entire time and absorb bullets safely without having to do anything else.
One more sees King fire out a winding narrow string of projectiles from his chest that swirl around but remain compact, and again can be easily avoided or absorbed with your shield depending on your positioning.
Sometimes King will summon several turquoise orbs by his feet which will break off in pairs as homing projectiles that travel along the floor of the arena, making them sometimes easy to overlook as they’re partially submerged in the water; they can still be absorbed easily with your shield however.
A particularly cruel trick comes with a variant of this attack. King will summon the same turquoise orbs that will fly low as they approach. If you notice that these are NOT trailing through the water, be prepared. These orbs can instead freeze in place around you before exploding with a nova shockwave immediately trailed by a ring of blue projectiles; each detonating at different angles.
It’s in your best interest to dash away as much as possible to steer clear of the initial detonations and allow you time to prepare jumps and dodges to avoid the shockwaves.
King can also throw out consecutive vertical lines of these lighter blue projectiles that home in toward your position, but again each one can be easily absorbed with your shield or even sidestepped entirely with a last second dash just before they reach you.
King - Phase 2
After depleting King’s first health bar, he’ll emit a large multi-tiered wave of blue projectiles in addition to a small sphere of blue projectiles that’ll only cover the immediate area around him (you can ignore it otherwise).
The giant spiral of projectiles from Phase One returns, but here it can now also be nova projectiles which you’ll have no choice but to time a well-placed dash to the side as you’re strafing to avoid.
The two-stage attack from Phase One also returns, with the same nova ring wall to jump over, but now the projectiles that fire out in a ring afterward are also nova projectiles. The consecutive vertical lines of homing projectiles also return and, you guessed it, they’re now nova projectiles that you’ll need to dash out of the way of.
Speaking of nova projectiles, King can relentlessly emit them during this phase. These can be huge dome-shaped explosions erupting from him, small clusters rising into the air before turning into homing projectiles you’ll need to dash away from at the last second, and long bouncing curved lines on the floor of the arena that ripple outward.
Something that can be difficult to spot unless you’re paying explicit attention is a windup animation to a melee attack. If King is at a reasonable distance from you, sometimes he can pull his fist back and then lunge forward; immediately darting across the arena and punching at you. Of course you’ll want to dodge the punch as he reaches you, but this can be difficult to time.
The one tell to look out for with this attack is that as King pulls his fist back before lunging, you’ll see it glint a bright flash of yellow/orange (circled in the image above). Immediately after this flash is when the lunge happens, so dodge a split second later to avoid him as he closes the distance.
The consecutive horizontal and/or diagonal shockwaves return from the prior phase, but like most attacks will now also be nova projectiles you’ll need to position yourself and jump over/dash under to avoid.
Occasionally King will raise his arms into the air, each one ejecting a yellow laser into the air. After a couple of seconds, King will then bring all his arms together in front of him and fire out a large yellow laser in your direction.
So long as you get the timing down, you can just dash once to avoid it, and then watch out for the few yellow vertical shockwaves that emit from the laser after its initial firing.
King can also conjure large curved walls of nova projectiles around itself with gaps at different intervals. Unfortunately for you, he’ll often do this in conjunction with restoring his forcefield.
As a result, you’ll need to time your entry to get in one of the gaps and melee him to bring the forcefield back down. You can also parry the nova projectiles if you’re feeling confident, but the gaps are large enough that you don’t have to take the risk if you don’t feel inclined.
Sometimes King will rush to the far side of the arena and conjure a giant blanket of nova projectiles that hang above the arena in a circle and gently begin raining down.
At the same time, he’ll cast thin wavy lines of nova projectiles that move back and forth along the floor of the arena. If you’re at a great distance, you can largely ignore this attack completely as the range isn’t all-encompassing.
King - Phase 3
After depleting King’s second health bar, King will emit the same multi-tiered projectile waves that he performed at the start of Phase Two - but as with every escalation and attack evolution in this fight, these waves will now be nova projectiles.
The homing projectile spiral attack returns yet again, but can now also be yellow projectiles. This is the same for the shockwave rings on the ground, the aerial horizontal and/or diagonal shockwaves, and the vertical homing projectile lines. King can also fire out the homing projectiles that freeze near you and then detonate in concentric rings of yellow and nova orbs.
Occasionally King will also fire out a giant cone-shaped vortex of yellow projectiles at you, with a smaller cone inside the larger one. The narrow end is what’ll reach you first, so you’ll need to either dash dodge to the side, or dash dodge through the larger cone and circumvent the smaller one.
We’re not done yet though, as King can perform yet another attack - summoning several vertical red beams that very quickly whip around toward you one after the other.
As you get near to depleting King’s third health bar, he’ll resummon his forcefield and create a wall of yellow projectiles with no gaps. Dash your way through and melee to trigger a cutscene.
Arjun beats King to death, and then proclaims himself as King as Nitya’s disembodied voice tells him to "take the crown". A giant glowing path appears before you at the edge of the arena, so head toward it for yet another cutscene.
