Quest Description
"Obtain the materials for Professor B so that he can finish building his mysterious machine."

How to Complete Mystery Man in Xenoblade Chronicles X

You can start this quest by speaking with Professor B in the northern part of the Central Industrial District.

When you approach him, he's curious about if you're another assassin or not, and why you might have been sent after him. You can choose to Correct Professor B that you're not an assassin, or you can Inquire about the strange word he said at the start of your conversation.

Professor B will press that he doesn't give lessons to people who are attempting to kill him, and he doesn't believe your intentions. Not yet, at least, until you don't attack him. When he learns you're a BLADE, he's more interested in hearing what the two of you could do together, and offers you a job. You can choose to Query about the strange word the professor keeps using, or you can Inquire about another strange word. Both choices come to the same answer, as Professor B doesn't realize that your people don't use those words.

No matter. Professor B is happy to work with you, and needs you to track down a handful of items for him to assist him in returning to his world. You can choose to Ask about Needs, or you can Ask about Studies.

The studies option adds more knowledge about what Professor B is trying to learn about, while focusing on his needs shows your professionalism toward the task. Both provide you with knowledge about the Waterway Temple and the tykki sap Professor B needs for his parts.

The waypoint sends you into Noctilum, where you'll need to visit the Waterway Tangle. It's south of FN Site 221, below the Humdrum Peaks.

When you arrive to the location, a cutscene plays out. Multiple BLADE members appear behind you and your team, asking if you're willing to answer specific questions. You'll have the chance to Answer, revealing what Professor B wants you to do, or you can Query about who Gadd is and what he wants.

This starts a fight between you and the BLADE members. There are two level 17 BLADE snipers, and a level 19 Gadd you have to defeat. So long as you're at the recommended combat level, you should make short work of this encounter.

After defeating Gadd and the other BLADE Snipers, the sap you're looking for is at the same waypoint. It'll look like the many other collectibles you have to find throughout Xenoblade Chronicles X for your Collectopedia, but it's going to be orange instead of white. After you have it, return to Professor B in New Los Angeles and present him with the item.

When you return, Professor B is happy to see you, and is not surprised Gadd attacked you. He explains that Gadd has been after his technology for a long time now. You can Inquire to what type of technology Professor B is talking about, or you can Worry about Professor B's safety after the attack. Professor B brushes off the idea that someone from this time period could be a problem to him or his technology, but he appreciates your concern. Here, Professor B explains he's from the future.

You can choose to Trust Professor B's claim that he's from the future, or you can Doubt it, claiming he's making a joke.

Regardless if you believe him or not, he still needs to get back to his time, and you can choose to Inquire about what he needs, or choose to Query how he's going to try, and go back to his timeline. Professor B explains that he plans to transform a car available in the Commercial District into a time machine. With a bit of luck, it'll be fast enough to help him get to where he's going.

He sends you off with some money to buy the best vehicle you can get in New Los Angeles. You'll need to head over to the Commercial District to purchase the car.

Upon arrival, you meet Graham, the car salesman. He says that Professor B is one of his best customers and has several vehicles lined up for you to choose from. You can pick to take the Average, the Junker, or the Luxury cars back to Professor B. Regardless of your option, all three vehicles produce the same result for the end of the Mystery Man mission in Xenoblade Chronicles X. However, the prices of the cars are different. If you want to save money, you can opt for one of the more affordable options; however, the most expensive vehicle is worth 100,000 credits.

When you return to Professor B, he is arguing with a Ma-non, Veven, who is detailing how they do not want to test the machine, believing there is a good chance they will end up dead. When you arrive, you have the choice to Probe about what's happening, or Query about the Ma-non Professor B is talking with.

Despite Veven wanting to learn more about the science behind the time machine, they're refusing to get into the vehicle. Professor B wants your help in talking some sense into the Veven. You have the option of Hyping up the Veven about the situation, or Persuading Vevon to get into the vehicle, using logic. It takes a bit more reasoning, but eventually, Veven is interested in going into the time machine to see what happens.

When Veven does finally get into the vehicle, a cutscene plays out, with the car zapping in a brilliant light. The car doesn't do anything special, though, ending the cutscene, and when you speak with Professor B again, he reveals that the car didn't move at all. However, Veven believes he's in the future. You have the choice to Humor him about the situation, or to Explain what happened with the time machine.

Veven won't be able to hear too well because the time machine was too loud. The conversation continues, with Professor B unimpressed by having let Veven drive it. The cutscene plays out, and he eventually asks if you can obtain some Topaz Wine for him. It's a specific item you can find while exploring Oblivia, and it's also possible you may have already picked up some during your travels in Xenoblade Chronicles X.

How to Find Topaz Wine in Xenoblade Chronicles X

You can find Topax Wine while exploring Oblivia. There's a chance Clay Tectinsula can drop it, but it's a random chance. You can find Clay Tectinsula by searching for them close to the Twin Arches and the Aaroy Plain regions, close to the center of Oblivia. They range from levels 21 to 30.

After you loot the wine, return to Professor B and present it to him. It was the missing ingredient he needed for his time machine. With the final item installed, you'll have a chance to Inquire to Professor B about who's piloting it this time, or you can Worry that the time machine could fail again.

Professor B would say that he cannot trust Venen to do it this time and says he will do it himself. He thinks it'll be the last time you see him, at least, for a while. You can then choose to give him a Send Off that you'll see him later, or Regret that he'll be leaving. Although Professor B appreciates the time he spent with you, he still needs to review it, and thanks you for the help you provided.

Professor B activates the time machine, and everything appears to have gone for the better. He disappears, and this ends the Mystery Man mission in Xenoblade Chronicles X. You receive 230 EXP, 14,000 Credits, and the Miramobile Holofigure as a reward.
