Golf Review

Nintendo's oldest portable golf game makes its 3DS encore appearance.

Golf gaming just keeps moving further and further back in time on the 3DS, as after the release of the modern excellence of Let's Golf 3D in July and last week's free shipment of the retro NES Open Tournament Golf to Ambassadors we're now getting an even more retro take on the sport – Golf from the Game Boy. And it's really, really retro.
As you've come to expect from Nintendo's golf games, this one once again stars Mario hitting the links and going for birdies with tried-and-true timed meter swing mechanics – tap A to start your swing, tap it a second time to set your power and then finish off with a third to set your accuracy. The system works just as well here as it ever has anywhere else, so Golf's a comfortable play.


Its featureset is just much more limited. While Let's Golf and NES Open have tons of extras to explore, plain old Game Boy Golf here has little else included beyond just getting out there and whacking at the ball – especially since these games' old Link Cable two-player modes are still not being emulated for their 3DS VC re-releases.

So Golf is OK in its retro way, but should certainly take a backseat to the eShop's other two most recent versions of the same sport.

Verdict

And 3DS Ambassadors shouldn't bother with it at all, of course. You just got a better, more complete, colorized golf game one week ago. For free!
