1845 The Sunderland Corporation Gas Undertaking was incorporated, in opposition to the Sunderland Subscription Gas Light Company.

1847 Ayres Quay Gasworks were erected by the Corporation.

By 1908 the gasworks were in poor condition and were demolished except for the gasholders.

1909 The first Dassau Vertical (sic) retorts in the UK were installed here when a new gasworks was constructed.

1951 CWG plant installed.

1966 Two gasholders remained.
