The Sinhala language of Sri Lanka

Sinhala is the mother tongue of the Sinhalese people who live in Sri Lanka. The Sinhalese make up the largest mother tongue group in Sri Lanka. Sinhala, or Sinhalese or Singhalese, is the official language of Sri Lanka, along with Tamil. It is spoken by about 19 million people. Sinhala has its own writing system, which evolved from the Brahmi script. It is an Indo-Aryan language.
