The Russian Language Around the World
The Russian language has a long and tangled history, and is often at the centre of controversy both within Russia and throughout the rest of the world. For a long time during the Cold War, Russian appeared as an ‘alien’ language to many in the Western world – but since the Berlin Wall came down and relations between Russia and the West have thawed, the language is much more openly embraced and widely studied abroad.

With 164 million native speakers, Russian is the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages, and the largest native language in Europe. It is the official language of Russia, and an official language of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. It is widely spoken in Ukraine, and it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. Significant Russian-speaking groups also exist in USA and Western Europe. Russian is written with the cyrillic script.
