The subject of this obituary, Mr. John William Govier, was born on the 17th day of March in the year of our Lord, 1841, at Chard, Somerset shire county, England. His father was a millwright and instrumental in building up the then progressive textile manufactory of the county. The son followed in the father's profession and after serving his apprenticeship in England, he came to American in the year, 1867. Pittsburgh being the first place of his activity, as a millwright.
Meeting with both success and reverses, he then made his home successively at St. Louis and Springfield, Mo., Galena, Kansas and Carnegie Pa., working as master mechanic and undoubtedly many are still today in the mills and factories in the cities named, machineries and improvements in machinery that bespeak the capability and skill of the master hand now at rest.
The past three years, though hoary with years, yet young in mind and spirit, he wished for and readily found employment in the Pittsburgh Steel works of our town, remaining active to within a few hours of his peaceful departure, Tuesday evening at five o'clock at the age of 70 years, 7 mos and 15 days, leaving to mourn his going before, a widow, four sons and one daughter and an only sister.
In our trials and bereavements may we clinging to Jesus be able to say:
"Tis my happiness below
Not to live without the cross
But the Savior's power to know Sanctifying every loss.
Trials must and will befall,
But with humble faith to see
Love inscribed upon the all
This is happiness to me!
Trials make the promise sweet,
Trials give new life to prayer,
Trials bring me to his feet
Lay me low and keep me there!
