August 1, 1929, when another officer, 28-year-old Herbert V. Fitzgerald, was killed as he and several other policemen attempted to arrest a man accused of murdering a woman. According to an August 10, 1929 article in the Bulletin of the Catholic Laymen’s Association, the man who shot Officer Fitzgerald was "on a rampage" when police were called to the scene. A native of New Jersey, Fitzgerald was one of the most popular men of the police department and a champion athlete. Survived by his widow, Louise Miller Fitzgerald, and numerous other relatives both in Savannah and New Jersey, Herbert Fitzgerald was buried in Savannah’s Catholic Cemetery.
