Erasmus University Rotterdam is aware of plans for a demonstration that focuses on one of our employees. We respect the right to demonstrate and understand that there are concerns and emotions. At the same time, we disapprove of an action that focuses on one person.
The safety of our staff and students is paramount. A demonstration aimed at an individual endangers that safety and does not contribute to the conversation we want to have as a university.
Our university has traditionally offered room for differences of opinion and encourages substantive discussion, including on sensitive topics. We understand that expressions on social media can sometimes evoke pain and indignation among staff and students. If opinions lead to controversies or undesirable expressions, we call each other to account and start the conversation. And if necessary, there are several independent committees available that handle every issue with great care.
