Taken a break from braids? Go-to aunty out of action? Just moved? Regardless, finding a quality braider for Afro-textured hair is a quest that, unfortunately, can come with a high flop risk. Why? Well, with the majority of braiders being independent and mobile, it’s not as easy as strolling into a high-street salon for a simple cut and blow-dry. However, the skill is always in demand, and though many offer, it’s unregulated AF. So, here’s a handy guide to finding the best braider to deliver on your style of choice.

How to find a braider

A recommendation remains king, especially for those hidden treasures not active on social media. If you don't personally know anyone who has great braids, keep a look out and don't be afraid to approach people and ask who did their hair. It's how half the beauty team found their braiders, don't you know.

Have you spotted a local salon? Pop in to enquire about its services and have a peek at the quality of the styles in progress. Trying a 20ドル to 30ドル style is a cautious way to see if you like a salon's work before investing what could easily be upwards of 100ドル for a look that only lasts up to six weeks.

Google search results can be hard to navigate, as they often throw up out-of-date sites. But if you type 'Braids' and your local town or city in an Instagram search, the 'For you' tab brings up local braiders' posts and accounts that you can browse with ease.

Inspiration images won't only help you decide on a style, but can also be shown to your braider ahead of the appointment. Showing a photo is an easy way to explain what you re after, plus your braider will be able to give you an approximate price for the style. And, worst case scenario, if you don't get what you asked for, you have it to refer back to.

Calculate the cost

Generally, the longer a style takes, the more it will cost, but like any hair service, the price will vary by region, too - so factor in the location (mobile or in-salon) and experience when working it out.

It's key to remember that spending more doesn't necessarily guarantee better results. To work out if a price is fair, we recommend getting three braiders' fees to create a benchmark. It's fine if your chosen braider charges more, as long as you think that extra coin is justified by their level of skill or experience.
