It may be overwhelmingly common, but it is so for a multitude of reasons, including the reasons I listed. Louis also fits in with a lot of other classic and timeless names and is versatile, working on a wide variety of backgrounds and age demographics. I also enjoy the readily available nickname (or diminutive) of Louie, which sounds soft and endearing, so helps balance the robust quality of Louis. I don't mind the variant Lewis but that particular spelling is seen more often as a surname than as a giving name. I'm far more accustomed to seeing Louis, so I tend to lean towards it more.

Was given the middle name 'Louis' after my grandfather, so I am a bit biased in saying that it's a nice name. (Regardless of pronunciation, since that seems to be a point of contention here.)
In French, the "S" is usually silent, so I don't see what the argument is. It is the same thing with the German W sounding like V. Names are pronounced differently in different languages. It's not rocket science people. LOO-is or LOO-ee, who cares?
It is also correctly pronounced "LOO-is" as in St. Louis, Missouri. I'm not sure why people here are acting like the LOO-is pronunciation is incorrect. I have multiple family members with this name in the U.S. and they pronounce it LOO-is.
To say Loo-is in an incorrect pronunciation is failing to recognize other world cultures and historical context. The name has been pronounced different ways all throughout history in different languages. If Loo-is is "incorrect" because it's not the original pronunciation, then LOO-ee is also incorrect, because it "should" be the French loo-EE, kind of like the English pronunciation of Marie (Ma-REE) as opposed to Mary (MAR-ee). All pronunciations of Louis are correct depending on what part of the world you live in, what language you speak, and how your name was intended for you.
If you live in the UK I'd recommend only using this spelling for the pronunciation LOO-ee. Any I've known in England have used that pronunciation, and used Lewis for LOO-is, so it'd avoid a lot of confusion.

I simply don't understand how could someone not like the name Louis, and its other variant, Ludwig. This was the name of so many kings, so many military leaders, generals, noblemen and other honourable people. Its other variant, Ludwig, also has the same. The meaning also is beautiful. It is etymologically and in terms of meaning also connected to many other names with a great history and which were borne by many important historical figures, kings, military leaders, etc. I love that it means "famous", similarly to Robert, which is also a name with a great historical background and heritage, and also borne by many important and honourable people throughout history. Louis/Ludwig is a truly great name with an absolutely great history, great meaning, and connection to many other historically rich names. All of this makes it one of the best names out there, because history of the name really matters.

I think this name is really beautiful. I would probably not use it though due to its similarity to Louise and Loser, which is such a shame as I love this name but kids today can be rather cruel and I would hate that to happen to my child as I was bullied about my name when I was at school.
