You remember
the sound.

The dial-up screech. The blue welcome screen. "You've Got Mail." AOL was more than a product: it was the door to a world that didn't exist before. Chat rooms, instant messages, your first email address.

We shipped a billion CDs to get people online. The people who came through that door are still here.

1985

A small online service launches in Virginia for Commodore 64 users. The internet just got its friendliest on-ramp.

1993

AOL mails a billion free trial CDs. You'd find them tucked into cereal boxes, magazines, airplane seat pockets. At one point, half of all CDs produced on Earth are AOL discs.

1997

"You've Got Mail" becomes the most famous phrase online. Half of all US internet users are on AOL. AIM buddy lists change how a generation communicates.

2026

AOL joins Bending Spoons. New ownership, same commitment to the experience you love.
