Old Frederick Road, which is part of the original National Road (along with two pieces of Johnnycake Road just to the east) that is now six lanes of US 40 to the south. This tranquil scene shows that some roads are better off being bypassed and (mostly) forgotten.
US 340 crossing the Potomac River just east of Harpers Ferry; the Shenandoah River joins the Potomac in the background. US 340, which runs through Virginia for about a mile after this, turns from east-west to north-south once it leaves Maryland.
