Exploratory Advising
Exploratory students at Wayne State University are incoming freshman students who are not ready to commit to a major. At the time of application, students can select one of the following Exploratory Tracks that best fit their academic interests: Social Sciences, Humanities, Physical Science/Math, or Life/Health Sciences.
What does the Exploratory Program provide for students?
Exploratory advisors guide students through the process of selecting a major. Some of the activities in the process include:
- An online Canvas Course – Exploratory Workspace (see below)
- Self-Discovery activities (learn about yourself)
- The Focus 2 Career Assessment
- Learning how to research and gather information about different majors
- Working with a Career Services counselor on the career development process
- Additional activities suggested by your Exploratory advisor
How long can I stay in the program?
While working on the Exploratory process, emphasis is placed on enrolling and completing General Education requirements. Students work on the Exploratory process during their first year in college but are required to declare their major by 30 credit hours.
Who are Transitional Students?
Current WSU students who have already declared a major but have a change of interest from their original major.
What support is provided to a Transitional Student?
Transitional students are invited to participate in the Exploratory process (activities listed above) and work with an Exploratory advisor to align their educational and professional goals with a major.

What is the Exploratory Workspace?
The Exploratory Workspace is a self-paced, online Canvas course that provides students with foundational information and activities that are helpful for freshmen in selecting a major.
Part I
The first module consist of readings, activities, and a video. The module takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete.
The readings will answer the following questions:
- How to stay on track and graduate in four years while in the Exploratory program
- What type of classes will I take in the Exploratory program?
- How do I select a major that will result in obtaining a satisfying career?
Part II
The second module explains the rules of the Exploratory program.
Part III
The final module contains activities that will assist you in discovering yourself.
