Music video assets

A "music video asset" is a customary music video delivered to YouTube by a YouTube music partner that embodies one full sound recording of one musical composition owned or controlled by a YouTube music partner and consists of visual content meant to enhance or promote the sound recording represented in the video.

Content such as non-music content (e.g. comedy, movies, behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, podcasts, audiobooks, and documentaries), or music content that contains multiple songs (e.g. live performances, DJ mixes, and other multi-song videos), or content that otherwise does not meet the criteria above should not be delivered to YouTube as a music video asset. Any user- or partner-provided videos should be claimed by content owners using the appropriate asset type, per the definition provided here.

The reference is a video file that conforms to these specifications.

A music video asset is distinct from an Art Track. An Art Track is an automatically generated YouTube version of a sound recording, used for recordings that don't have a produced music video. Art Tracks are not used for Content ID matching.

How to identify & fix embedding issues for music video assets

To identify music video assets which do not embed a sound recording:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. Select the Assets tab .
  3. Select these filters:
    • Asset Type: Music Video
    • Relationships: No
  4. You’ll get music video assets which don’t embed a sound recording asset. You can export this list.

To embed a sound recording asset in a music video asset:

  • CSV / Content Manager Package Uploader: Populate the audio_isrc column in the 'Music Video - Update' CSV template with the ISRC for the sound recording that you want to embed.
  • DDEX: You can find information about how to create an embedded relationship between music video and sound recording in this article.
  • API: using assetRelationships.insert() with childAssetId set to the sound recording asset ID and parentAssetId set to the music video asset ID.
