Content guidelines for creating effects in Effect Maker

All effects must follow our Community Guidelines and the additional guidelines below. Creators are responsible for ensuring their published content, including content created using Effect Maker, follow these rules.

Please do not submit effects that:

  • Violate YouTube’s Community Guidelines
  • Include contact details, financial information, or personally identifiable information about you or others
  • Include content or assets that you do not have rights to use
  • Include external links or QR codes
  • Are about or target kids as their primary audience
  • Include nudity or sexual content
  • Include realistic depictions of weaponry
  • Include depictions of controlled substances such as drugs or alcohol
  • Include effects which promote the use of cosmetic surgery
  • Include self-harm or references to self-harm

Effects Thumbnail guidance

Thumbnails that violate our Community Guidelines aren’t allowed in effects. YouTube’s thumbnails policy applies here. It’s important to have trustworthy thumbnails and a clear visual representation of what the effect actually does, to ensure all effects have an opportunity to be discovered and used.

What this policy means for you:

  • Misleading UI elements: Thumbnails must not include any elements that falsely represent any user interface or functionality. This includes labels like "new", buttons, or icons.
  • Transparent or animated thumbnails: Thumbnails must not contain transparency or be cropped into circles or other non-square shapes. Thumbnails should also be static.
  • Text only: Text should be used only when it’s a critical component of the effect. The thumbnail should be a visual representation of the effect.
