NEW: Set a Super Chat Goal 🎯

Subscribe to the YouTube Creators channel for the latest news, updates, and tips.

Whether you're live streaming, creating an immersive live experience, or premiering a new video, it’s important to connect with your audience. Now, you can use goals to enhance those connections. Goals help creators boost engagement, create interactive community moments, and increase your earnings.

If you have Super Chat and gifts turned on, you can now set goals on live streams and Premieres. Goals allow you to interact with viewers, encouraging viewers to engage in interactive community moments that can help you earn more.

Note: Once the live stream has begun, goals will be available on desktop and mobile live streams and Premieres in the live chat and Live Control Room. Viewers can purchase Super Chats that contribute to the goal on mobile and web. To determine your Super Chat eligibility, see here.

Live goals

Live goals let you set a specific target amount of interactions with your content, encouraging viewers to participate and become a part of the experience. Live goals are a way to rally your community and make the experience more interactive. Viewers can then, for instance, purchase Super Chats that will count towards that goal, creating community experiences. This lets you concentrate on creating content while your community interacts with you and the goal you set.

Format availability for goals

Goals are designed to work seamlessly across various types of content:

  • Live streams: Engage your audience in real-time with interactive goals during your live streams.
  • Immersive live streams: Take community engagement to a new environment with goals in immersive live experiences.
  • Premieres: Build excitement and anticipation for your new videos by setting goals for your Premiere events.

Types of live goals

Currently, the following goal types are available on live streams:

  • Super Chat goals: Available across horizontal live streams and Premieres, Super Chat Goals allow viewers to contribute by purchasing Super Chats, highlighting their messages in the chat.

  • Gift goals: Currently available on vertical live streams (where gifts are available), gift goals let viewers contribute by sending gifts, an interactive and expressive way to show their support.

Starting a goal

Note: Currently Super Chat goals are available on web and mobile in Classic live streams. When setting a Super Chat goal, you can choose which colors count towards the goal. Gift goals are available on mobile Immersive live streams and can be set up on web in Cameo for Immersive live streams. Availability may change as more goal types are rolled out.

In order to start a goal:

  1. After creating a live stream on your mobile device, select the bullseye icon on the bottom of your screen.
  2. A gift goal set up screen will pop up. Enter the total gifts you’re aiming for in the Goal amount and how long you’ll run the goal for in the Timer section.
  3. You’ll then be prompted to enter a message or brief description of your goal.
  4. Select Start goal.

You have now successfully started a goal that you and your community can work towards. Once the goal is achieved, a celebration will show up on the screen, capturing the moment for you and your viewers.

Part of engaging with your viewers is deciding how to celebrate reaching your goal, building a connection with your audience and community. Once your goal is live, viewers can tap the goal icon, view the details, and contribute using the appropriate fan funding feature.

Note: Making purchases for a live goal does not guarantee the goal's achievement nor the creator's celebration.

After starting a goal

After starting a goal, let your audience know about your goal and how you’ll celebrate when you reach it. You and the audience can follow along on your progress (showing from the live stream description), target amount build up and time remaining. When you reach your goal, everyone will see an animation, creating a moment where you and your audience can celebrate together. If you don’t reach your goal, you can try again by starting a new goal.

Creator tips for goals

Benefits for creators:

  • Boost engagement: Goals create community moments that encourage viewers to interact and participate.
  • Increase earnings: This new way to connect with your viewers provides a new and interactive way to support your content.
  • Spark creativity: Goals can inspire new content ideas and structures.

Important considerations:

  • Viewers are purchasing digital goods: Remember that viewers are purchasing Super Chats or gifts, not the goal itself or a guaranteed celebration.
  • Not a fundraising tool: Avoid using goals to raise money for specific items or expenses.
  • Keep celebrations fun and creative: Celebrations should not involve direct monetary value. They should be engaging ways to celebrate the moment and interact with your community.
  • Celebrations aren't guaranteed: Viewers are supporting you, not obligating you to fulfill a specific promise.

Goals are a new tool for connecting with your audience and taking your content to a more engaging community building space. So, experiment with different types of goals and celebrations to find what works best for you and your community.
